How to make a pet water fountain. Pets love fresh, moving water but commercial fountains are expensive and can be dangerous. Here's how to make one for under that your pets will love. TRANSCRIPT: Hi! My name is Erica and today I am going to show you how to make a water fountain for your cat. Sometimes cats don't drink enough water. It's important for cats to drink enough water to prevent kidney disease, diabetes, and other illnesses. Now, cats actually prefer moving water. We're not quite sure why, but cats prefer freshly oxygenated water. So, today, I'm going to show you how to make a cat water fountain yourself. You're going to need a few things to get started. The first thing you'll need is a stainless steel bowl. Stainless steel is easy to clean. Make sure it is a large bowl. You'll also need an air pump. An air pump circulates air. This air pump is sufficient for a 10 gallon aquarium. That's all you'll need. You can buy an air pump at a pet store, WalMart, or other place like that. You'll also need some tubing. And an air stone. Here's what it looks like. They come in a variety of sizes, so choose the one you like best. Now, the most important thing you need is a "check valve". Here's what it looks like. A "check valve" prevents water from backing up into the air pump and causing an electrical shortage. Make you sure you buy the "check valve"! Measure your tubing and cut it.
